GreenKayak is an environmental organisation based in Denmark with over 66,000 volunteers and more than 104 tonnes of waste collected, their mission is making a visible impact on Denmark’s waterways, and beyond.With a growing number of kayaks stationed across Europe, the organisation needed a scalable digital solution to help manage kayak bookings and engage volunteers through gamification.
Developyn partnered with GreenKayak to design and implement a new digital ecosystem, one that not only made it easier for users to reserve kayaks but also empowered them to become active stewards of the environment.
As GreenKayak scaled its operations and gained international visibility, its existing manual and fragmented booking system began to show its limitations. Users had to navigate a clunky online experience to reserve kayaks, and the administrative burden on the internal team was growing rapidly. There was no centralised system to handle booking logistics across multiple locations, and no streamlined way to engage returning volunteers or track collective impact.
At the same time, GreenKayak wanted to deepen its relationship with volunteers by turning ocean clean-up into an engaging experience. Their vision was to introduce gamified features like leaderboards, badges, and progress tracking, but their current systems lacked the flexibility and integration required to make that possible.
With their mission depending on participation and accessibility, GreenKayak needed a modern, intuitive solution that could handle thousands of users while capturing the spirit of community involvement and environmental impact.

The organisation required a reliable partner who could understand their mission quickly, execute a solution efficiently, and help build something engaging and scalable.
Our approach began by developing a centralised online booking dashboard tailored to GreenKayak’s unique needs. The dashboard allowed administrators to manage kayak availability at various locations, control scheduling rules, and monitor overall system activity. This created a solid operational foundation that significantly reduced administrative overhead and gave the team real-time visibility into booking patterns and user engagement.
Once the backend infrastructure was established, we translated that experience into a custom mobile application designed for both iOS and Android users. The mobile app allowed users to easily find nearby kayak stations, check availability, and make bookings in just a few taps. Built with performance and simplicity in mind, the app catered to both first-time users and returning participants.
To bring GreenKayak’s community-driven vision to life, we embedded gamification directly into the app. Volunteers could now log the amount of waste collected during each trip, earn digital badges, climb leaderboards, and see the collective impact of their contributions in real time. These features not only enhanced the user experience but also increased engagement and encouraged repeat participation.
All systems were built with scalability in mind, allowing GreenKayak to expand to new cities and countries without major rework.

Since launching the platform, GreenKayak has experienced a marked increase in both operational efficiency and user engagement. Over 66,000 new volunteers have registered through the mobile app, helping the organisation collect more than 104 tonnes of ocean waste.
The administrative burden on the GreenKayak team has been significantly reduced, freeing them up to focus on partnerships and expansion rather than manual coordination. The gamification features have become a central driver of volunteer participation, creating a sense of achievement and community among users.
Perhaps most importantly, the new digital tools have helped GreenKayak stay true to its mission, empowering people to take direct action in cleaning their environment and creating a more sustainable future.
